With Mumbai’s AQI showing no signs of relenting, how can you harness yogic kriyas to strengthen your lung health

In the high-density environment of Mumbai, our lungs have become the silent processors of an increasingly toxic atmosphere. As the AQI climbs, the respiratory system is forced to work overtime, filtering out particulate matter and carbon soot that settle deep within the pulmonary tissues. In my practice, I view the body as a sophisticated machine. When the external environment is compromised, the only logical solution is to upgrade your internal filtration system through precise yogic engineering.

The Mechanics of Nasal Cleansing While there are six primary purifications, two specific kriyas stand out as essential "servicing" tools for the Mumbaikar: Jala Neti and Kapalbhati.

Jala Neti: I often describe this as a "hydro-service" for your sinuses. Using a lukewarm saline solution to rinse the nasal tracts washes away the PM2.5 particles and thick mucus that accumulate after a day in Mumbai’s traffic. By clearing the mucosal lining, we restore the natural "sweep" of the cilia, allowing them to trap pollutants more effectively.

Purifying the Lower Lobes: Kapalbhati The primary danger of Mumbai’s air is that it settles. Shallow "stress-breathing" causes pollutants to stagnate in the lower lobes of the lungs. Kapalbhati is the "system flush" every Mumbaikar needs. These forceful, rhythmic exhalations act like a bellows, creating a rapid pressure change that expels stagnant air and carbon dioxide from the deepest recesses of the lungs. This kriya ensures the alveoli (air sacs) remain active and clear of accumulated toxins, significantly increasing your functional vital capacity.

Enhancing Gas Exchange Efficiency

Once the passages are physically cleansed, we must optimize how the machine uses oxygen.

Bhastrika: This increases the rate of gas exchange, ensuring the body extracts oxygen with maximum efficiency even when the air quality is suboptimal.

Anulom Vilom: Pollution triggers systemic inflammation. By balancing the breath, we soothe the nervous system and reduce the oxidative stress caused by environmental toxins.

My Perspective: A Daily Protocol for a Mumbaikar, these kriyas are not "optional" yogic practices; they are essential maintenance. We wash our skin to remove the city’s grime; we must wash our lungs for the same reason. I recommend performing Neti and Kapalbhati every morning. You cannot control the city’s smog, but by mastering these kriyas, you ensure your internal engine remains clean, efficient, and resilient against the world outside.
